The WWU Libraries' Video Collection
Wilson 2 West, A/V Room

General Information:
The Libraries' video collection is housed at Wilson Library, room 267.  The collection consists of thousands of titles which support the curriculum and instructors of the the university.  Videos range from a large selection of feature films in both VHS and DVD formats to documentary and instructional films. With the exception of Course Reserve materials videos are held on open shelves and may be either checked-out for home or classroom use or viewed in the library.  The loan period for videos is 3 days for students, 7 days for faculty and staff.  Videos on Course Reserve are limited to 4 hours use.  Videos fines are $1.00 per day.  Regular reserve materials fines apply to videos on Course Reserve.  A portion of the fine money collected goes to replace worn and damaged videos.

A collection of videos relating to music curriculum is also held at the Music Library.  These tapes and DVDs may not be taken out of building and must be viewed at the Music Library.

A listing of new additions to the collection is regularly posted on the web by the Reference and Information staff.  Bulletin board displays outside of room WL 267 also provide information about selected new acquisitions considered to be of general interest.

Finding A Video In The Catalog:

  • The easiest way to locate a video is to use "Video" search link under Books & More on the main library web page.
  • Videos can also be found in the catalog a variety of ways.  Any video can be searched using the same kind of search commands that are used to search for print materials - author, title, subject, etc.  Directors, actors, producers, etc. can be considered authors for the purpose of catalog searching.

        Search Strategies:

  • Traditional Search:  If a traditional title, author or subject as mentioned above search yields a long list of hits your search can be limited to help   locate videos within the list.  To do this click on the "Limit this search" button at the top of the screen.  Then, from the pull-down menu for "Material Type" choose "Visual Media" and click the sort button.
  • Genre Search:  At the main catalog search menu choose "Genera / Form."  From the pull-down menu select "videos".  This will lead you to links which list all of the videos owned by The WWU Libraries broken out into VHS and DVD format.
