Thanksgiving in Canada
This year, Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on Monday,
October 13. With this holiday, Canada marks its earlier harvest season and honors the
historical ceremony of thanks held by Martin Frobisher at his pioneering settlement in
Newfoundland in 1578. Other traditions related to the day include days of thanks and
"good cheer" long held in French Canada and in Nova Scotia. Different days in October
and November served as Thanksgiving until January 31, 1957, when Parliament proclaimed the
second Monday in October as the permanent "Day of General Thanksgiving ... for the bountiful
harvest with which Canada has been blessed."
Featured in the case are Thanksgiving
Proclamations (1907) from Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Virginia,
Vermont and Washington State. They were sent by Washington State Governor Meade to
"Principal" Mathes at the State Normal School. The Governor thought they might be of
interest to students and were to be retained in the library.
