Suggestion: I found your diversity diplay and resource guide featuring Hisanic poulation at Wilson 4E very helpful. I tried to access a copy of the booklet with the web address, but the page could not be displayed. Is it available? I would like to print a copy.
Suggestion: Kudos to the person or persons who came up with idea to redo the Current Interest Books area by reducing the seating and putting the revolving paperback racks within the space instead of along the hallway. Also, swapping the Current Interest/Diversity Books and New Books better showcases the Current Interest/Diversity Books. This move also opens up the hallway and the Mathes Figurine collection case isn't so crowded.
Suggestion: I must take issue with Leza Madsen's claim that the Ronald Reagan display is an "impartial" recognition of Mr. Reagan, when in fact it is a blatant glorification of him. The banner announcing the day of mourning, the photographs bursting with patriotic pride, and George Bush's letter of praise give a strictly one-sided account of the Reagan presidency -- anyone looking at this display with no other knowledge of Mr. Reagan could only conclude that he was a hero, rather than the highly controversial figure that he actually was.
An impartial display would acknowledge at least some of the less admirable bits of the Reagan story: his anti-environmental policies; his budget deficits; his support of death squad governments in Guatemala and El Salvador, and of such characters as Manuel Noriega, Saddam Hussein, and Osama bin Laden; and of course the Iran-Contra scandal.
As a member of the Display Team, I would like to join in the current conversation regarding the display marking the death of President Reagan.
The discussion seems to be confusing the library’s selection policy with the library’s display policy. Although one stated goal of library materials selection is to purchase materials representing differing viewpoints, that is not one of the goals of individual library displays.
The Western Library Exhibits policy states as one of its two goals: “To direct attention to the materials, services, and aims of the Libraries.”
Suggestion: I am appalled by the slanted display promoting Reagan as a figure of glory. I thought college campuses and libraries in particular presented a unbiased look at an issue or person. This is especially disappointing during an election year. After checking our catalog, their are books that could have been included that present some critical discussion of the man.
