Country Background - Political, Social, & Economic

These resources provide overview and background information on the political, economic, and cultural climate for most countries of the world. Also, look under the name of the specific country or geographic area for other resources that specifically focus on that area. Many resources include statistical data.

  • Background notes / United States State Department
    These provide information on geographic entities and international organizations and are updated periodically. They cover demography, history, the economy, government, foreign relations, including relations with the U.S., and travel and business information. Most include a section on "Private Sector Development and Foreign Investment." Older issues can be found at: http://www.state.gov/www/background_notes/ (2001-2003) http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/ (prior to 2001)
  • Country profiles / Eldis
    This site has extensive links to current news, maps, statistics, CIA and IMF country profiles, industrial and trade profiles, and human rights records. At present, there are Country Profiles on nations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and other developing countries. Most are PDF files.
  • Country studies (Library of Congress) / Library of Congress
    The Country Studies Series presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. This website contains the on-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Because the original intent of the Series' sponsor was to focus primarily on lesser known areas of the world or regions in which U.S. forces might be deployed, the series is not all-inclusive. The Web site also contains brief, more up-to-date Country Profiles on select countries.

    PriceWaterhouseCoopers revised a number of their excellent guides for doing business in a number of countries in the late 1990's. These contain practical information on population, culture, history, the economy, labor relations, labor practices and working conditions, and regulatory agencies. Longer sections deal with accounting practice and taxation. Use the online catalog to find out whether there is a recent "Doing business in [name of country]" guide for a specific country. A number of the most recent guides have the title "Doing business and investing in [name of country]".

From their drop down menus you can search for documents and statistics from specific countries. It is non-comparative information.
  • Deutch Bank research / Deutch Bank
    This provides access to a Country infobase which provides economic indicators for most countries world wide. It also has special reports on world energy, demographic changes, China and Germany.

For each country there is a country profile followed by information on marketing data, communications, transportation, business travel, key contacts, and a summary trade regulations and documentation required. Also included are brief sections on U.S. ports, U.S. foreign trade zones, World Trade Center Association members, U.S. government agencies providing assistance to exporters, foreign trade organizations, foreign communications, and general exports and shipping information and practice.

    This web site from the Economist Intelligence Unit provides global business intelligence for the digital age. Click the tab labeled "doing ebusiness in...." to see how EIU grades 68 of the world's economies on their ability to facilitate digital-age commerce.
  • Lex Mundi Association Doing business in...
    Members of the Lex Mundi Association have written legal reports on doing business in countries, states, or provinces. The Guides to Doing Business series provides important country and state-specific information needed when planning international business strategies. The reports are listed in alphabetical order; most are in PDF format. Resource Guide for International Business Transactions -- A list of selected publications, online databases, websites, and seminars materials that provide resources useful when transacting business on an international scale.
International Agencies
  • Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
    ASEAN was established to promote economic cooperation among the countries of Southeast Asia. This site includes political and economic information, statistics, and some very brief country profiles.
  • Europa / European Union
    This is the European Union's web site and provides statistics and information about policies and affairs of the European Union.
  • Inter-American Development Bank
    This organization was established to help economic and social development in Latin American and the Caribbean. The site includes statistics, policies, business opportunities, and private sector information. The Research and Statistics section include information on income distribution, hemispheric trade, population, prices, and national accounts.
  • International Labour Organization
    This is a United Nations agency that promotes labor rights worldwide. The site includes information on international labor standards.
  • International Monetary Fund
    This is a cooperative institution of countries, designed specifically to promote a stable system of buying and selling currencies. The Fund Rates section includes information on exchange rates for selected currencies and for the current month. The web site has full text of some IMF documents for its member countries, as well as the current IMF annual report.
  • World Bank Group / World Bank
    The World Bank posts information on how to do business with the bank, country and regional reports, and listings of their publications, and has some country information. The topics tab lists a wide variety of portals dealing with development issues such as globalization.
  • World Trade Organization
    The World Trade Organization administers trade agreements and GATT. It handles trade disputes, helps develop national trade policies and acts as a forum for trade negotiations.

This has a list of other Euromonitor print publications, and a valuable list "International Official Organizations" and "Pan-Regional Organizations and National Statistical Offices". These listings do not include web addresses, but having the proper organizational names can help you find relevant web sites more easily, and give you better search results.

Investment Climate
 Investment climate is made up of a number of issues.  These include:
  • Country commercial guides / Industry Canada
    This provides commercial and regulatory guidelines for import and export for various countries. They also examine investment climate. Data is provided by STAT-USA to Strategis.gc.ca.
    • Tip
      Search for "investment climate" and the name of your country. The government produces many reports on investment climate.
  • Investment climate around the world : voices of the firms from the World Business Environment Survey / Batra, Geeta.

    This summarizes the results of a World Business Environment Survey (WBES). This survey gathered data from more than 10,000 firms in 80 countries and shows that there is a strong association between corruption, financing, regulatory and tax constraints, policy uncertainty, and protection of intellectual property rights with firm-level performance.
