Company status: is it a public, private, or non-profit company?
Activity sector: is your company a producer, manufacturer, supplier, wholesaler, retailer, or service provider?
Directories
Directories provide basic information such as company name, address, phone/fax number, number of employees, sales volume, and lists of officers. Often, they also provide SIC and NAICS Codes, sales volume, a short but detailed company profile, history, and financial information. Many can be searched not only by company name, but by industry or other data.
Better Business Bureau / Better Business Bureau Covering US companies, this site provides brief information about companies. It includes company addresses, contact numbers, time in business and complaint / reliability history. It is most useful for finding information about private companies and non-profits.
Corporate Affiliations / Lexis Nexis Corporate Affiliations (CA) is a directory of public and private information. Includes basic company information (contact info, location, SIC/NAICS), a financial snapshot, executives, and a corporate tree (parents company, subsidiaries, etc.) CA does not have analysis or a narrative, but it is a great place to find information on privately-held companies.

Hoover's Handbooks
The Hoover’s series of handbooks provides a brief company overview, and includes company strategy, reputation, ownership, where the stock is traded, ticker symbol, the fiscal year-end period, and the address, telephone number and web site address of the company. Brief histories help provide a fuller picture of each organization, and provide lists of principal products, brand names, subsidiaries, and joint ventures, and information on key officers. In addition, Hoover’s provides financial information: sales, net income, income as a percent of sales, stock price, price/earnings ratio, number of employees, and key competitors, and market share /ranking. A graph shows ten year’s of stock price history (when available).
Hoover's.com / Hoovers Background information and financial data on public and private companies. This site includes links to Web sites, a register of thousands of companies on the Web and a directory of more than 50,000 public and private world-wide companies. It also includes quotes, stock charts, financials, key officers and competitors, press releases and Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Hoover's Online is searchable by company name, ticker symbol, keyword or last name. Not all the information is free of charge.

Check Catalog This multi-volume set provides a thorough overview of a company’s direction over time, there is often a main entry, which is updated in subsequent volumes. Most companies chosen for inclusion in this directory have a minimum of $100 million in annual sales, and are considering leaders in their industry or geographical location. About 10% of the companies represented are private or non-profit. For this reason, you usually do not find small companies in this directory. Entries typically run three or four pages, but may be longer, and may provide a brief bibliography of books or articles about the company. The entries often include significant information on the brands the company produces.

It is only searchable by category; the arrangement is under type of company rather than name.

United States Securities and Exchange Commission / United States Securities and Exchange Commission Provides information on US publicly traded companies. Site also details regulatory information, including background on rulemaking and enforcement. Includes the EDGAR database and tips for investors in regard to the Internet. Note: SEC's EDGAR database requires all companies, foreign and domestic, to file registration statements, periodic reports, and other forms electronically through EDGAR. It has a delay on the release of filing data which ranges from 24-48 hours. The prospectus and proxy filings often contain information on market share and market size.

Check Catalog Askf for Value Line at the Reference Desk in Haggard. There are three parts to this survey: Summary and Index, Selection and Opinion, and Ratings and Reports. It analyzes and tracks about 1500 stocks in about 75 industry groups. The Beta, and measures of timelines and stability, are among the more noteworthy information contained in the Survey. It gives high and low prices as well as relative price strength. The Selection and Opinion edition also provides a current analysis of the company. Each industry section includes a one-page summary. Be aware that Value Line industries do not follow either SIC or NAICS structure.

Topics cover every area of business including marketing, management, MIS, POM, economics, finance, accounting, and international business. Additional full text, non-journal content includes financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, book digests, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, and SWOT analyses.
