| How to Locate Biographical Information |
There are several ways to go about locating biographical information. For books on individual subjects and collective biographical works, search the Online Catalog using your person's name as a subject, for example: ANGELOU, MAYA - Biography.
Other sources of biographical information, typically more brief than books, can be located through some basic types of biographical sources: Biographical Indexes, Biographical Directories, and Biographical Dictionaries.

Contemporary Authors is a comprehensive source of biographical information on over 100,000 modern novelists, playwrights, poets, scriptwriters, non-fiction writers and journalists.

- Biographical Dictionaries and Directories
A biographical dictionary is a collection of articles on selected individuals, often arranged by country of origin or occupation. Biographical dictionaries provide brief, factual information about people, living or deceased.
There are several categories of biographical dictionaries; the most comprehensive is a universal dictionary which includes people from all time periods, countries, and occupations. Who's Who (Ref. CT 120 I5) is an example of this type. National or regional dictionaries are limited in coverage to a particular geographical area, while subject biographical dictionaries limit entries to specific professional groups.
Typical examples of these are the Dictionary of American biography, American National Biography, and the Dictionary of Literary Biography. The Dictionary of American Biography (Ref. E 176.D56) is an authoritative work in over twenty volumes, with over 14,000 extensive articles on persons now deceased who made significant contributions to Amercan life and culture. Typically, articles in this set include sources for additional information.
The American National Biography (Ref. CT 213 A68 1999) offers portraits of more than 17,400 men and women from all eras and walks of life.
Each volume of the Dictionary of Literary Biography (Ref. PN 451.D54) docuses on a specific period or literary movement, and includes contributors to literature from the United States as well as other countries. Entries include a chronological career summary, a list of publications, as well as bibliographic citations to works by and about the subject.
An example of a directory-type biographical source is the Biographical Directory of the American Congress (Ref. JK 1010 .A5). Containing over ten thousand entries of brief information on U. S. representatives and senators, delegates of the Continental Congress, territorial delegates, etc., this and other directories typically are brief compilations of information on individuals of a particular profession or discipline.

People and Discoveries (Public Broadcasting Service) is a databank consisting of 120 entries about 20th century scientists and their stories.
