Google patent search The google patent search enables one to find out if there are existent patents for any particular subject. It doesn't cover patent applications, international patents, or U.S. patents issued over the last few months.

US Patent and Intellectual Property Resources
European Patent Organization / European Patent Organization This is a free-of-charge patent search facility provided by the European Patent Organization. It provides access to European (EP) patents, PCT (WO) patents, US patents (1859+), Japanese patents and many other worldwide patents. It also provides access by country. This database is useful for searching older US patents as it allows searching by keyword and author. All US patents from 1859 are in pdf format.
US Patent Office Patent Database / United States Patent and Trademark Office This is searchable full text database in five-year blocks back to 1976, and in one additional block covering the years 1790-1975. However, the 1790-1975 block can only be searched using patent numbers and current U.S. Classifications. All patents are available in tiff images which requires you to download free software.

International classifications / World Intellectual Property Organization This site contains basic information concerning four international classifications, their use worldwide, principles of their application and revision and explanatory material. It also includes a latest edition of each classification in the English and French languages.
