Howard E. Buswell, a local historian of the Bellingham and Whatcom County area, documented the social and economic life of the lower Nooksack Valley from the time of first contact between settlers and Native Americans through the early decades of the twentieth century. The collection includes pamphlets, photographs, cartographic records, journals, manuscripts, historical reference works, newspapers, microfilm, and audio-tapes. Particularly well represented are materials relating to the Lummi Nation. The collection also contains oral history interviews conducted by Buswell, primarily with Native Americans in the 1950s, and recorded on open-reel tapes. Several of the interviews are transcribed and the tapes are duplicated on cassette and available for research use. The collection also contains private, business and legal records generated by Marietta storeowner Bernard N. McDonough. The extensive photograph series includes over fifteen hundred images on various topics including fishing, logging, road construction, schools, Whatcom county pioneers, Native Americans, shipyards, and the Alaskan gold rush. This collection also includes regional maps, numerous plat maps relating to the Pacific Northwest, Whatcom County and Bellingham, fishtrap location maps and nautical maps.
