Locating Illustrations and Other Visual Materials from the Western Libraries and the Web

Table of Contents:

How to Find Pictures in Books Using the Library Catalog

Books that are composed primarily of illustrations are identified by one or more subject headings. The sub-heading Pictorial Works is used for these titles.

For example, the keyword search "afro-americans and pictorial works" will retrieve the following book (among others).

        Author         Wright, Richard, 1908-1960.
        Title            12 million black voices.
        Pub. info     New York, Arno Press, 1969.
        Descript     152 p. illus. 26 cm.
        Subject       Afro-Americans -- Social conditions -- To 1964.
                            Afro-Americans -- Social conditions -- To 1964 -- Pictorial works.

Books which are not primarily pictorial can also provide useful illustrations. Start with a subject or keyword search describing what you want. In the Description section (Descript) of an online catalog entry you will find the following terms:

ill. or illus.    =   Books which contain a few or more pictures.
col ill or ill (some col.)    =  Color pictures.
ports   =  Pictures of people.

A Title Search under "Dover Pictorial Archive Series" will collect the numerous titles owned by the Western Libraries.  All of these titles have copyright free illustrations.  Some examples are:
    The American West in the Thirties:  122 Photographs by Arthur Rothstein  F 595 .R83  (Haggard 3)
