Locating Plays and Play Scripts Using the Library Catalog
Search the library catalog by author or by the title of the play. Some plays are published separately and will be found as an individual title, while others are published in collections or anthologies. A catalog search by AUTHOR will locate collections of works by that author.
To browse a collection of acting scripts selected by the Theatre Arts Department select Form/Genre and then Acting Scripts from the Library Catalog. This will collect all the acting scripts in the libraries collection. You can browse through them in alphabetical order. To search from within this collection, click on Limit from the catalog's menu (top or bottom of screen). You can then perform a variety of limits including author, title, and words in title.
If a play has been published in an anthology of works by many playwrights, a WORD search may pick up titles listed in the contents section of a catalog entry. For example, if you are looking for the play A Picture Perfect Sky, select WORD search and enter "picture perfect sky." This search will retrieve the book Plays by Women: an International Anthology. You will see A Picture Perfect Sky listed in the Contents section of this record.
Using Play Indexes
When a play has been published in an anthology of plays by multiple authors, you will need to use an index to plays in anthologies. Some plays are published in periodicals and must be located with an index.
Play Index Online provides the publishing information needed to locate a play in the variety of ways it is available: published as a separate title or in an anthology or collection. Included are links to Web sites that can contain full text, criticism, and other useful information. Search over 30,000 plays written from Antiquity to the present and published from 1949 to the present. Play Index Online is searchable by title, author, subject, style, genre, and cast type.
