| Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services (EESP) - Getting books and articles sent to your home |
Western Libraries provides document delivery and interlibrary loan services to students, staff and faculty enrolled in courses through Extended Education and Summer Programs.
Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services include mailing books and videos to your home address, making copies of articles from journals and sending them to you via email and getting books and articles from other libraries.
Table of Contents:
Document Delivery
Extended education students/faculty can request materials (books, videos) or copies of journal articles be sent to you from the Western collection. Use your Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery account to request these materials. All you need to do is set up an account, called your Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery (ILLiad) account.
ILLiad is the name of the software the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery department uses to manage all their interlibrary loan and document delivery requests. When you need something, regardless of if it's in the Western collection or not, you can fill out a request and the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery department will do their best to fill your request.
Interlibrary Loan will mail books and videos to the address you specify when you set up your ILLiad account. They will also make or get copies of journal articles for you and send them to you via email.
The first thing you need to do is to set up your Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery account (ILLiad).
Getting books from other libraries - Summit
Summit, is another service you can use as Western students/faculty. If there is a book you need and Western does not have it, you can check the Summit catalog. The Summit catalog will tell you what is owned by many of the academic libraries in the Washington/Oregon area and you can order books directly from those libraries via the Summit catalog. This is faster than requesting a book though your interlibrary loan/document delivery (ILLiad) account (see below). If you don't find the book you need in the Summit catalog, then go ahead and fill out a request in your Iinterlibrary loan/document delivery (ILLiad) account and the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery department will try and get the item for you. You can't use Summit to request journal articles, you need to use your interlibrary loan/document delivery (ILLiad) account to do that.
Interlibrary Loan
When you need a copy of a journal article or want to borrow a book and item you need is NOT in the Western collections (check the Library Catalog and Summit first!), then you can ask the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery department to get a copy or borrow the item for you from another library. Use your Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery (ILLiad) account (the same one you use for Document Delivery requests).
The main difference between document delivery and interlibrary loan is that
-
The loan period may be shorter.
-
You may not be able to renew a book you got via Interlibrary Loan. Please check with the Interlibrary Loan department if you want to renew a book or other item you got via Interlibrary Loan
-
If it is a copy of a journal article you are requesting, it may take longer to get than if the journal is in print in Western Libaries collection. The ILL department asks for 5-7 working days to get articles from other libraries.
