| Antarctica: Resources from Western Libraries |
Emperor penguins and chick Image copyright: Pat & Rosemarie Keough | This resource guide was created to accompany the international traveling exhibit, ANTARCTICA - Passion and Obsession, hosted by Western Washington University Libraries, April through June, 2008. The exhibition showcased the exquisite photographs and award-winning book Antarctica by Pat and Rosemarie Keough. This guide offers a sampling of resources available from Western Libraries, and points to more, to help students and others with their research into topics inspired by the exhibition. The guide's focus is on major themes suggested by the Keoughs' project on Antarctica: environment and geology, discovery and exploration, birds and marine mammals, and the arts of photography and bookmaking. The emphasis is on selected reference sources and also includes some seminal and recent works, article databases, journals, videos, and children's literature. Environment & Geology
The Keoughs write that "Antarctica is a harsh land of extremes ... and of superlatives. Magnificent on a grand scale, it can also be hostile and unforgiving.... It is the coldest, the windiest and the most isolated of the seven continents, as well as the highest and the driest. Antarctica, a desert, ironically has over 70 percent of the world’s freshwater locked up by ice and snow in a great polar ice cap which smothers nearly the entire landscape. The very whiteness of this continent reflects the sun’s warming rays, thus perpetuating its frozen state in spite of the fact that in summer Antarctica is the sunniest continent on earth.” [from their web site, http://www.keough-art.com]
The main subject heading in Western Libraries catalog is Antarctica. For more sources, try the narrower terms South Pole or Antarctic Ocean. Find works on many other topics using the subject term Antarctica with subheadings like birds, geology, glaciers, maps, marine animals, marine pollution, meteorites, natural resources, paleontology, or zoology.

Birds & Marine Mammals
Antarctica teems with birds and marine mammals, including Emperor and Adelie penguins, wandering albatrosses, petrels, skuas, terns, seals, and whales. Together the Keoughs photographed, authored, designed, and published ANTARCTICA, the first book in their “Explorer Series,” and the product of their 24-month sojourn exploring the Antarctic’s polar plateau, mountainous coasts, and icy seas. In keeping with the mission of the series to create beautiful books while assisting environmental and social causes, Pat and Rosemarie Keough have pledged all profits to international albatross conservation programs to help reverse the precipitous decline in the world’s population of albatrosses and large petrels. For more sources, try Antarctica with birds, marine animals or marine biology.

Children's Literature
The Keoughs' stunning multimedia presentation at Western Washington University was open to familes from WWU and the wider community. The fascination with the cold continent, and its wildlife, is a cultural phenomenon - witness the popularity of the documentary film, March of the Penguins. Research on authors and illustrators of children's literature is becoming a strong focus at WWU, so here is a sample of nonfiction books and fictional stories about Antarctica written for children and young adults, located in the Children's Literature Interdisciplinary Collection of Western Libraries. Photography
The Keoughs' work, which captures the rare beauty of Antarctica's mountains, glaciers and wildlife, is the result of two austral summers spent on the Antarctic continent. In a statement about their photography experience the Keoughs said, "We keenly felt the immensity of Antarctica and also a certain vulnerability.... Our photographs, many of which we composed together using one camera on one tripod, reflect our shared emotional response to what could easily be construed as overwhelming stimulus." Through their photography, the Keoughs portrayed the "white continent" as a place of magnificent color. They have captured "the myriad shades of white, blue, pink, purple, gold, and even green - colours which change throughout the long days at the whim of the weather and with the angle of the sun." [from their web site, http://www.keough-art.com] For more sources, try nature or landscape photography.
