SciFinder

SciFinder is a research discovery tool that allows you to explore the CAS databases containing literature from many scientific disciplines including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, and agricultural science. Includes Medline.

How do I know if our library gets this journal?

Use the Library Catalog to find out about journals. Click on the "Journal Titles" tab, then enter the first few words of the journal title and click on the GO button. If nothing is found, try changing the search to "Title contains."

The library catalog says WWU gets this journal, but I can't find it. Now what?

Your next step depends on why the journal is not found. If you are in the library, Wilson Library 5th floor West, looking through the science journals, there is a telephone, at the entrance to the corridor to the East wing, that calls directly to the Information & Reference Desk. If you are not in the library, here is a link to the Ask Us! service.

The library catalog says WWU gets full text online, but when I click on the link I am asked for a password. Now what?

This usually happens when SciFinder, or any other database, has a link to the full text of a journal article, but Western does not have a current subscription to the journal. Check the journal in the library catalog or a quick call to the Information & Reference Service desk will help verify the status of the journal subscription.

A password request may also occur if you are using a computer off campus, and have not gone through the library website to authenticate your search. If you go directly to a journal website using an off-campus computer, the journal will not recognize that you are authorized to read the journal. Following a full text link from SciFinder, when off-campus, may cause this to happen. When linking to an online full-text journal from off-campus, login to the library catalog first.

I found an article that has the data I need in it, but WWU doesn't get the journal--what are my options?

I can only find references to patents--how do I get the full-text versions? What is ILLIAD? AccessScience

Web of Science
• Dates covered: 1995-current
The Web of Sciences includes three citation indexes: Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Over 8,000 scholarly, peer-reviewed journals published from 1995 to the present are included in the indexing. Building on the list of cited sources (or footnotes) for each entry, this database can search for works that have cited a specific author or a specific article. Web of Science is also searchable by keyword, author, journal, address and other fields. Consortium (12 Libraries) Share 15 Simultaneous Users.
