Collection Development Policy
Peter Smith, Librarian

  1. Applicable LC Classes:
  2. Call No. Subject Heading
    QD 1-69 Chemistry (General)
    QD 71-142 Analytical Chemistry
    QD 146-197 Inorganic Chemistry
    QD 241-441 Organic Chemistry
QD 450-801 Physical and Theoretical Chemistry
    QD 901-999 Crystallography

  3. Academic Departments, Programs, etc.:
  4. The Chemistry allocation supports the curriculum of the Department of Chemistry. The department offers the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Education, and a Master of Science in Chemistry. Majors include Chemistry, Chemistry/Mathematics, Chemistry/Physics, Chemistry/Biology, Biochemistry/Cellular and Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry. The Advanced Materials and Engineering Center (AMSEC) is an inter-departmental program that supports cross-disciplinary research in materials science.

  9. Formats collected/Non-Subject Parameters:
  10. The Chemistry collection consists of mostly books and journals.

  11. System Coordination and Resource Sharing:
  12. The Orbis/Cascade Alliance purchases a package of online journals published by the American Chemical Society.

  13. Electronic Databases:
  14. SciFinder Scholar, which searches Chemical Abstracts, is the primary resource for finding journal articles in chemistry and related literature. Other databases popular among faculty and students in the Department of Chemistry include PubMed, World of Science, and ProQuest Science Journals.

  15. Notable Features:
  16. The chemistry collection is strong with journals, especially online journals. Through the Orbis/Cascade Alliance, there is online access to journals of the American Chemical Society. The Chemical Abstracts database in SciFinder Scholar and the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology are significant components of the collection.

  17. Narrative Statement:
  18. The Chemistry allocation is dominated by journal subscriptions, but the departmental faculty strongly support the purchase of books for the collection. When journal inflation absorbs the entire allocation, the faculty agree to reduce the number of subscriptions to keep funds available for the purchase of monographs.
