French Language and LiteratureCollection Development Policy

The French literature and language collection is designed to support the curricular and research needs of the French faculty in the Department of Modern & Classical Languages. A language major and minor in French are offered as is a double major and a French Major with a Teaching Endorsement without teacher certification. Courses are offered on elementary through advanced French, civilization and culture of France, French literature, business French, texts by Francophone women writers, French language history, French cinema, French linguistics, and teaching-learning processes in elementary French.
Geographic: France, but also including other parts of the Francophone world, from Belgium to North Africa and French Antilles to Canada, where French is spoken and literature is spoken in French. Language: The primary language is French, with some translations of texts in English. Literary criticism is principally in English. Chronological Limitations: Empahsis is on the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, 17th through 21st centuries.
Primary literature in French, secondary literature in French and English, textbooks are rarely purchased. Explanatory Notes: Monographs and serials are collected, as are journals, microfilms and media, and electronic formats. Videotapes, DVDs, CD-ROMs are selected selectively when requested by faculty to support instruction and do not duplicate the Language Media Center collection.

Current subscriptions include the Modern Language Association Bibliography and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts. Other useful databases include: Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Historical Abstracts, CPI.Q (Canadian Periodicals Index), and ProQuest 5000 to name a few.
The French language and literature collection supports research and instruction of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages, and other departments including, History, Art, and Linguistics. It contains materials in all formats when requested by faculty for instruction and research needs. |
