  3. Academic Departments, Programs, etc.:
  4. The Germanic languages and literature collection is designed to support the curricular and research needs of the German section of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages. A language major and minor in German are offered as is a double language major, a language minor in German Area Studies and a German major with a Teaching Endorsement without teacher certification. Courses are offered on elementary through advanced German, beginning and advanced German grammar review and composition, German for business purposes, German phonetics, German civilization, German literature (with specific classes on 18th and 19th century German literature), and teaching-learning processes in elementary German.

  7. Scope:
  8. Geographic: Germany, including Ausstria and German-speaking Switzerland. Exile literature is also included.

    Language: German is the primary language of the collection. Secondary materials for undergraduate needs and faculty research are acquired in German and English.

    Chronological Limitations: Emphasis is on the 18th century to the present.


  9. Formats collected/Non-Subject Parameters:
  10. Primary literature in German, secondary literature in German and English, textbooks are rarely purchased.

    Explanatory Notes: Monographs and serials are collected, as are journals, microfilms and media, and electronic formats. Videotapes, DVDs, CD-ROMs are selected selectively when requested by faculty to support instruction and do not duplicate the Language Media Center collection.

  14. Current subscriptions include the Modern Language Association Bibliography and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts. Other useful databases include: Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Historical Abstsracts and ProQuest 5000 to name a few.

  16. This collection is a well-balanced representation of German literature and language.


  17. Narrative Statement:
  18. The German language and literature collection supports research and instruction of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages, and other departments and programs including, History, Art, and Linguistics. It contains materials in all formats when requested by faculty for instruction and research needs.
