  3. Academic Departments, Programs, etc.:
  4. The History collection is designed to support the curricular and research needs of the History Department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Approximately one quarter of the faculty deal with United States history, one quarter with European history and half of the faculty cover Canadian, Medieval, Ancient, Environmental, Chinese, Middle East, Latin American and Japanese history. The History Department offers two Bachelor of Arts degrees. The first is the major in history and the second is a major of history/social studies appropriate for students in secondary teaching. A Bachelor of Arts in Education is also offered for elementary education with a minor in history or a minor in foreign cultures. The department also offers a minor in Latin American Studies and a Master of Arts degree in History (thesis and non-thesis). In addition to the Master of Arts degree in history, the department also offers a graduate program in archives and records management.

  7. Scope:
  8. Geographic: The United States and Europe are emphasized. The collection has been increasing in the history of China, Japan, Mesopotamia, Latin America and Canada as a result of new faculty hires. Recently, the department added two 19th century American history scholars. The collection contains fewer volumes in certain areas sich as the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Switzerland, reflecting the areas not covered in the department’s curriculum.

    Language: The collection contains primarily English language materials. Some of the other languages represented in the collection include German, Spanish, French, Mongolian, Chinese and Japanese.

    Chronological Limitations: None. Collection ranges from earliest times to the present.

  10. Explanatory Notes: Monographs and serials are collected, as are journals, microfilms and media, reference works, and electronic formats. Videotapes, DVDs, CD-ROMs are acquired selectively when requested by faculty in support of instruction.

  12. Summit and ILLIAD (interlibrary loan).

Current subscriptions include America: History and Life; Historical Abstracts; Hein Online; JSTSOR; Readers Guide to Periodicals (Retrospective); CPI.Q (Canadian Periodicals Index); New York Times Index Online; and ProQuest Research Library. The library also subscribes to The History Cooperative.

  16. The collection supports other departments and programs such as: Liberal Studies, Anthropology, Classics, Economics, Political Science, and Modern & Classical Languages.
