Finding Folktales at Western Libraries

Hungarian folktales Native American legends Brazilian folktales Norse myths

Where are the folktales?

  • The Children's Literature Interdisciplinary Collection (CLIC)

Many folktales can be found in The Children's Literature Interdisciplinary Collection (CLIC), located on the 4th floor on the Wilson side of the library.

The collection is arranged by Library of Congress Call Numbers, just like the rest of the library. Many fairy tales, fables and folktales are shelved under call numbers PZ8, PZ8.1 and PZ8.2. Children's books of mythology from all cultures will be in the BL range of call numbers. For Native American legends and folktales, look in call numbers E98 and E99. Folklore from specific countries or regions fall under GR99.6-GR390.

CLIC has two sections. You will want to check for the above call numbers in both sections.

  • Picture Books: A-Z
  • Children’s Literature: A-Z

For a particular title, be sure to CHECK THE CATALOG, http://lis.wwu.edu/screens/opacmenu.html, for the location and availability information.

  • Folklore Collections

Many collections of folklore can also be found on the 3rd floor on the Haggard wing of the library. The Library of Congress (LC) Call Numbers are similar to those used in the CLIC. For example, folklore collections from specific countries or regions fall under GR99.6-GR390.

Try searching by these LC subject headings with country or region subheadings. For example:

  • Folklore -- Africa
  • Oral tradition -- United States
