When to use: You will need to find out if Western libraries subscribes to a particular journal if
- You have a citation or reference to a journal article from a print source and you want to get that article. For example, you may find a citation to an article in the back of your textbook or in another book you are reading. You may also find a citation at the end of a journal article and you want to locate that article.
- You want to know if Western has a subscription to a particular journal so you can browse the contents. If you want to find articles on a specific topic, please see the Finding articles guide.
To find out if Western has a specific journal:
- Choose Books & More (Library Catalog) from the top left-hand corner of
the screen. This will take you to the Library Catalog.
- Now choose the Journals, etc. tab.
For example, I want to find the following article:
Crouter, A. C., Bumpus, M. F., Davis, K. F. & McHale, S. M. (2005). How do parents learn about adolescents’ experiences? Implications for parental knowledge and adolescent risky behavior. Child Development, 76(4), 869-882.
To get this article, I need to find out if Western libraries has the journal Child Development.
- Type in the name of the journal you are looking for or browse the list of journal titles alphabetically.
- Click on GO.
- Select the journal from the list by clicking on the title.
- This opens the Find it! window. The Find it! window will indicate if Western has the journal electronically (online) or in print or both.
This particular journal is available both online and in print. Looking back at my citation, I know I need volume 76 from 2005.
- On the Find it! screen, I can see that the journal is available electronically for the year that I need.
- Click on the GO button at the end of the line We have - Full-text online.
- This will take you as close as possible to the actual article itself. Depending on the journal, you may still need to select the volume and issue that you need from the journal site. In this case, I need issue 4 so I would select issue 4 from the list and then choose the article I want and print it or save it to my computer.
- If the year you need is not available electronically, go back to the Find it! window. Click the We have a copy in the library - Library catalog link to see if Western has the volume you need in print.
- Check WE HAVE section of the journal record to see if Western has the volume you need.
In this example, Westerns owns from 1931 to the current issue of this journal.
- If Western has the volume/year that you need in print, note the location
and call number to find on the shelf. The call number in the above
example is HQ750.A1 C45 and the location is Wilson 2nd Foor East.
- If Western does not have the volume/year you need or does not own the journal at all, you can request the article using
Interlibrary Loan/Document
Delivery (ILLIad) services. It may take up to 10-15 working days to get the article.
