Web of Science: How to do a Cited Reference Search
Cited reference searching allows you to determine who has cited an author's work and where. In effect, it allows you to use an earlier work as a "search topic" to find more recent articles on the same topic. Articles citing an older article (listed in a cited references or bibliography) are likely to be about the same subject.
To begin your search:
1. Locate the Web of Science from the alphabetical listing on the Western Libraries' Indexes and Databases page.
2. Click on FULL SEARCH. Choose the database(s) appropriate to
your topic:
Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED)--1995-current
Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)--1995-current
Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI)--1995-current
3. Click on CITED REF SEARCH.
4. Enter information in one or more of the search field boxes: cited author, cited work (abbreviated journal title), and cited year.
TI: Title
Sex stereotypes and their effects in the workplace: What we know and what
we don't know
AU: Author
Heilman, Madeline E
SO: Source
Journal of Social Behavior & Personality. Special Issue: Gender in the
workplace. Vol 10(6), 1995, pp. 3-26
PY: Publication Year
1995
5. Click on Look Up. The Summary screen displays your Cited Reference Search. The results of this search are records for articles that contain all the information you entered above.
6. Check off the reference that matches your article and click on Search.
7. The Cited Reference Search Results screen gives you a list, with summary information, of all the articles published that cite the 1995 article by Heilman.
8. Note that the titles of individual articles or papers are underlined. These are "hot links" to the full bibliographic records of your results. The Web of Science is NOT a full-text database and contains only citations with abstracts.
9. Click on the
button
located near the top of the screen in full record to get direct linking to
full-text, when available. If full-text isn't available, Find it! will provide
a link to search the catalog or request the item through ILLiad. You can also search the Western Libraries Online Catalog by Journal title to
see if the library subscribes to the journal(s) you need.
Printing, Saving to a Disc, and Exporting References
1. Mark the records that you want ("Mark All" marks ten at a time) and click on SUBMIT.
2. Click MARKED LIST. A list of the records you marked will display.
3. Format for print, save to a file, export, or e-mail.
