Use the Library Catalog to locate biographies of individuals, or containing biographies of many individuals, such as biographical indexes, biographical directories, and biographical dictionaries.   Also useful for collecting background  and examining the social influences on a person are chronologies, historical timelines, and specialized encyclopedias which focus on a specific time period.

      1. Search the Library Catalog

If you need to find a person to research:
Search the catalog using a SUBJECT Search, for example: Women--United States--Biography; Biography--20th Century; Politicians--United States--Biography;
Slaves -- United States -- Biography
. Broaden the search by clicking on subject headings from within a record.
If you already have the name of a person to research:
Search a person as a SUBJECT, using their LAST NAME first.

For example: King, Martin Luther; Roosevelt, Eleanor; Long, Huey

Examples of additional subject headings listed may include:
Roosevelt, Eleanor - correspondence
Roosevelt, Eleanor - political and social views

Search by AUTHOR, enter the LAST NAME first, to locate autobiographical works, works discussing personal ideologies, contributions, etc., as well as diaries, letters & correspondence, memoirs, or personal narratives.
For example:  Roosevelt, Eleanor.

2. Use Biographical Indexes
Biographical indexes condense the search process by indexing both major and lesser biographical dictionaries and collective biographies.
America: History and Life 1964- Available on the library web site: select "Articles, Search Databases", then select "Browse Indexes and Databases Alphabetically".
AHL indexes scholarly articles on the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present.  It is also a good source for biographical articles, and allows searching by an individuals' name, an event, or limit to a specific time period.  CLIO Notes guides you through US History by allowing you to browse chronologies and brief summaries of significant events and themes in American history.

     3.  Use Biographical Dictionaries & Encyclopedia
A biographical dictionary is a collection of articles on selected individuals, often arranged by country of origin or occupation.
In most cases, entries are by individuals rather than by subject. Biographical dictionaries provide brief, factual information
           about people, living or deceased.

There are several categories of biographical dictionaries; the most comprehensive is a universal dictionary which includes people from all time periods, countries, and occupations. Who’s Who (Ref. CT 120 I5) is an example of this type.  Entries however, are often brief, providing only vital statistics and minimal information.

Examples include:

American National Biography / Ref. CT213.A68 1999
This set is the successor to the Dictionary of American Biography.  Coverage includes some updated biographies from the earlier DAB which reflect new discoveries of primary source materials or new facts concerning the life of an individual, as well as more coverage of women & minorities.  Inclusion requires  that  persons are deceased - coverage is from 1980 to the present.

Typically, articles in this set include sources for additional information. This set was published in the 1920's - 30's, supplements in ten year increments have been published, covering persons who died since the previous volume, to 1980. The successor to this title is the American National Biography / Ref. CT213.A68 1999.

Use the INDEX to locate information by name, profession (archaeologist, politician), event (war of 1812), by subject (civil rights movement), or geographical location (Spain).  Information on a particular person may be within several volumes of this set - Usually there is a main entry, as well as additional entries for associates, people who influenced them, those whom they have influenced, and their philosophy, theory, or contribution.

National or regional dictionaries are limited in coverage to a particular geographical area, while subject biographical dictionaries limit entries to specific groups, professions, or time period. These more specialized resources usually provide more in-depth coverage.
