American Literature: A Guide to Literary Research
 

This guide includes resources which provide an overview of the study of American Literature.  Resources listed provide timelines, discuss literary movements,  covering the history and criticism within the discussion of different and emerging  literary theories on American literature.  Some include biographical information, and discussion of authors representative to a particular theme or genre.

Searching the Library Catalog
Materials are listed in the Library Catalog. Search by author, title, subject, or keyword. Keyword searching allows you to combine terms with "and", "or", "not",
and searches keywords in the title, subject, and contents. Subject searching follows the Library of Congress subject headings.
Authors are searched by name
e.g. Hemingway, Ernest, and literary books are listed by title - The Sun Also Rises

Serials (magazines, journals, newspapers) are listed by  journal  title in the Catalog. To find articles, use online indexes & databases.
MLA
is the premier database for literary topics. Access from "Articles, Search Databases" on the Library homepage.

American Literary Scholarship.

Essays that assess the year's research in American literature. In the first section scholars focus on specific major writers and in the second section the focus is on literary periods, forms, and topics.

Based on 20th century themes.  This is no substitute for the Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century (Ref. PN 771 E5) or for more specialized reference sources on individual authors, but is a convenient one volume source providing entertainment and information.

Reference Guide for English Studies

Provides a survey map of reference resources in contemporary English studies. This guide provides three types of entries. First lists the scholarly references with basic bibliographical information, second lists scholarly journals in particular fields and third lists of frequently recommended works in a particular field.

Reference Works in British and American Literature
