Introduction

Christianity  "is the religion that honors Jesus Christ as its founder and as the object of its worship. Its foundational document is the Bible, which is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament. The three largest branches of Christianity, in order of their numerical strength are traditionally given as Roman Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox, although within those broad categories there are numerous denominations."
Smith, Jonathan Z., ed. The HarperCollins Dictionary of Religion. San Francisco : HarperSanFrancisco, 1995.

This research guide is an introduction to resources, available through Western Libraries, on Christianity.  It is by no means a comprehensive list, but rather a tool to begin further inquiry and research.

The guide points to reference sources and important works on Christianity. Included are resources from the print, video and microform collections, as well as selected web sites. You will find information about searching the online catalog to locate further resources and using indexes and databases to locate journal articles.

Annotated citations are provided for selected reference sources, audio/visual materials, and web resources.  For each source, the library call number is listed after the basic citation information.  Check the Western Libraries Online Catalog for the location and availability of materials in this research guide.

To locate further materials, use the suggested Subject Headings in the Western Libraries Online Catalog. It is recommended that you also search these terms in Summit. In addition to the Subject Headings listed below, we recommend that you also use the Keyword search option with these and related terms. We are continually adding materials to the library collection, so the newest additions may not be represented in this guide, although we will make every effort to keep this up to date.

Journal Articles

Finding Journal Articles

  1. Define your search. The more specific you are with the topic that you are researching the more successful you will be in finding relevant information. Determine synonyms, related terms or word variations. Utilize search features such as truncation and Boolean logic (and/or/not).

  2. Select a database (a usually large collection of data organized especially for rapid search and retrieval -as by a computer). Databases may include journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, literature reviews and/or bibliographies. Use the "advanced search" option to refine your search.

  3. Most databases are online and available from the Library Information System, unless otherwise indicated. Select "Search Databases" from the library homepage.  Click on the blue hyperlink: browse indexes and databases alphabetically.  Access is available from within the library, campus computer labs, dorm rooms, and off-campus.
