Fly Fishing News, Winter 2008

In Memoriam: Jack Hutchinson
We mourn the loss of our dear friend and benefactor Jack Hutchinson, who died suddenly on December 9, 2008, at his home in Everett, Wash. A passionate fly fisher and bibliophile, Jack donated over 300 books to The Fly Fishing Collection, including many valuable editions of classic works by major English and American authors. Thanks to Jack, our collection has grown at a pace impossible to realize without his generous help. Over the years, he became a significant influence and, most importantly, an invaluable colleague. We are deeply saddened by his passing and will always treasure the memory of his friendship, advice, and wise counsel. Jack Hutchinson, pictured here fishing the Skagit in 1970, was 80 years old.

Fly Fishing Advisory Group
On November 25, 2008, Special Collections welcomed the Fly Fishing Advisory Group, which assembles periodically to discuss and provide advice on the progress and future prospects of our collection. On this occasion, we discussed the current status of the oral history program (nine transcripts now online), the long list of new acquisitions since January 2008, and the nearly-final plan for the renovation of the sixth floor of Wilson Library to accommodate Special Collections and provide showcase space for The Fly Fishing Collection. Members of the group pictured are (left to right): Danny Beatty, Marian Alexander, Rick Osen, Paul Piper, Bela Foltin, Steve Raymond, Peter Smith, and Jack Hutchinson (sadly, his final visit). Not pictured, but also in attendance: Tamara Belts, Chris Cox (our new Dean of Libraries), and Thea Kleiber, Director of Development for the Libraries.
Honoring George F. Grant
Special Collections is currently offering a display honoring famed Montana fly fisher, fly tyer, conservationist, and author George F. Grant, who passed away recently in Butte, Mont., at the age of 102. The display features items from The Fly Fishing Collection, including flies tied by Grant, publications written by him in support of the Big Hole Foundation, which he founded in 1988, and a copy of the deluxe edition of one of his seminal works, The Master Fly Weaver.
