North Cascades Audobon Society Visit

Members of the North Cascades Audubon Society visited Special Collections January 22, to see reproductions of John James Audubon's Birds of America illustrations.
"The Original Water-Color Paintings by John James Audubon for the Birds of America, Reproduced in Color for the First Time from the Collection at the New York Historical Society," is the full title of the set, published in 1966. It is a collector's edition, one of 750 copies.
The book and print collection is the gift of Joe and Roberta Eblen in honor of their daughter, Anna Eblen, who is chair of the Communications department at Western.
New Books for Fly Fishing Collection

A new list of titles added to the Fly Fishing Collection from July to December 2010 is now available. All books added to the Fly Fishing Collection are donations from our friendly fly fishers in the Northwest.
The Purpose of the Fly Fishing Collection at Western Washington University Libraries Special Collections is to collect, preserve, and provide access to diverse materials supporting study of the sport of fly fishing.
The collection includes books, periodicals, manuscripts, photographs, artworks, audio and video personal interviews and histories, and fly fishing artifacts such as rods, reels, flies, and fly tying materials.
Walton's Compleat Angler Gift

Our friends John Freeman, Danny and Dave Beatty visited Special Collections January 7, 2011. John Freeman donated a rare book, The Compleat Angler, with decorations by Frank Adams, published in 1930.
The Compleat Angler, or, the contemplative man's recreation, being a discourse of fish and fishing not unworthy the perusal of most anglers, is the full title of the book by Izaak Walton, first published in 1653. 
This gift is one of 450 copies, signed by the artist Frank Adams. With gilt edges and gilt lettering on the spine, illustrations like the one here, and facsimile printing with original spelling, this is a beautiful book just for viewing. Gift of John and Lynne Freeman.
During the same visit, Danny Beatty returned a bamboo rod made by Letcher Lambuth. Danny had the middle section ferrule repaired by Tom Fulk.
The rod was found by Danny in Ruth Sumner's garage, was loaned to the International Fly Fishing Center, and now is part of the Fly Fishing Collection in Special Collections.

Exploring Decadence in Special Collections

On September 30, 2010, we welcomed Professor Kristin Mahoney and her students enrolled in English 410: Studies in Literary History (Decadence). Among the Special Collections resources introduced to the students was The Yellow Book, the late 19th century avant-garde periodical published in London from 1894 to 1897. Co-founded by Aubrey Beardsley who also served as its art editor, The Yellow Book was associated with aestheticism and decadence and frequently featured Beardsley's striking drawings. |
