Western Collection: Schwartz, M. and VF

Biographical Note

A teacher and scholar of geology, specializing in coastal geology, geomorphology, and earth science education, Maurice L. Schwartz was born September 27, 1925, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was educated at Columbia University (BS 1963: Geology; MA 1964: Geology; PhD 1966: Geology). His doctoral dissertation was entitled Beach Profile Translation: Scale of Shore Erosion. His early academic teaching experience included appointments at Columbia University, Brooklyn College, and Ione College. In 1968, Dr. Schwartz was appointed to the faculty of Western Washington State College (subsequently Western Washington University) as Assistant Professor of Geology and Education. Attaining the rank of Professor in 1975, he was honored on his retirement in 1993 with the title Professor Emeritus of Geology and Education.

During his long academic career, Dr. Schwartz also held appointments as adjunct faculty and visiting professor at Nova University Institute of Coastal Studies, University of Pittsburgh Semester at Sea Program, University of Puerto Rico Department of Marine Sciences, and served as a faculty member at National Science Foundation Science Summer Institutes held at Western Washington University during 1970-73. His administrative appointments at Western included service as Acting Dean of the WWU Graduate School (1987-88) and Dean, WWU Graduate School and Bureau for Faculty Research (1988-93). A prolific contributor to the literature of his specialties, as well as to the proceedings of professional conferences, Dr. Schwartz is also known for providing field and laboratory proof of, as well as for naming the "Bruun Rule" in shore erosion.
