Biographical Note

A teacher of English and internationally renowned poet, Knute Skinner was born April 25, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was educated at Culver-Stockton College, Canton, Mo.; Colorado State College (now University of Northern Colorado) (AB, 1951); Middlebury College (MA, 1954); and the State University of Iowa (now University of Iowa) (PhD, 1958). His doctoral dissertation was entitled The Edge of Laughter: Poems. His higher education teaching experience includes appointments at the State University of Iowa and Oklahoma College for Women (now University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma). In 1962, Dr. Skinner was appointed to the faculty of the department of English at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University), where he attained the rank of Professor in 1973. On his retirement in 1997, Dr. Skinner was honored with the title Professor Emeritus of English.

Dr. Skinner's poetry has appeared in British, American, and Irish periodicals as well as numerous anthologies. His many volumes of collected poems include A Close Sky Over Killaspuglonane (1968; 2nd ed., 1975) In Dinosaur Country (1969), Hearing of Hard Times (1981), The Flame Room (1983), Learning to Spell Zucchini (1988), The Cold Irish Earth (1996) and An Afternoon Quiet and Other Poems (1998). Dr. Skinner also contributes short stories and reviews to literary journals and has served as a poetry editor. He has provided poetry readings at conferences, colleges, universities and high schools throughout the U. S., England, and Ireland. Knute Skinner currently resides in Ireland.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection consists of issues of periodicals, little magazines, and newspapers, and copies of collected works, anthologies and other works containing poetry, fiction, essays, and criticism written by Knute Skinner and published from 1956 forward. In addition, there are reviews of Skinner's work and biographical articles written by others during this period. The collection does not include manuscripts.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by the title of the anthology, periodical, little magazine, newspaper or other work containing the published work. The arrangement is by Special Collections.
